A Steamer Missing.
AUCKLAND, Aug. 15. The Northern S.S. Company's McGregor which broke down off Wairoa on Friday last, losing her rudder, stern post, and propellor. was sighted by the Gairloch, and the latter, in roponso to signals of distress, bore down .and took the disabled steamer in tow. About 40 miles froni Manukau she was forced to leave off towing, the hawsers having been carried away and fouled the Gairloch's propellor. The Gairloch stood by the McGregor till Saturday forenoon, and then left for Oneliunga to get more coal and fresh hawers, leaving the McGregor apparently safe under canvas. On Sunday morning two steamers, the .Gairloch and Staffa, left to search" for the McGr-egoi, hut returned this morning without finding any trace of her. It was believed that the McGregor would drift towards Kaipara, but the Gairloch went as far as Kaipara Heads without sighting her, while the Staffa went 30 miles out to sea. Great anxiety is felt. On account of the high wind and sea the Gairloch was unable to take the passengers from the McGregor. As the wind is from the land there is no danger of the sj^amet going ashore, The Staffa again started this morning in search of the missingsteamer,
