_ The annual ordnance prize firing competition by the H. Battery was commenced on Saturday, the range being at the north end of Collingwood street. Upon arrival, however, it was found that the target had been erected some considerable distance beyond the carrying range for which the six pounder Armstrong guns in use are sighted, and after firing two or three rounds the shooting was abandoned for the day, and arrangements were made for a fresh competition. This morning, the target having meantime been brought within closer range, three detachments were present under the command of Captain Leggatt, Lieutenant Topliss and Hon Surgeon Coleman being also engaged at the Battery. Some excellent shooting was made, considering the nature of the target, which consisted of a flag supported by a floating triangle, Sergeant Doyle making one direct hit. The following are the points gained by each detachment; -Corporal Way's detachment, 22 points ; Sergeant Doyle's detachment, 20 points ; Corporal Madigan's detachment, 18 points. The anriiveraary services of the Wesleyan Sunday School were held yesterday, when services appropriate to the occasion were preached by the Rev W. H. Beck, who has jusb completed his three years Ministry in Nelson. In the morning the attendance was fair, bub in the evening tbe church was crowded, and several were unable to gain admittance, even after fresh forms had been placed along the aisles, The Bcrvice in the afternoon wob also well attended, and an excellent address was delivered by the Rev Mr Hoatson of Christchurch. The children attending the school Bang with good effect some special hymns, the various parts being taken by the little ones in a manner that would put some of their elders toblusb, Tbe church was tastefully decorated, and reflected great credit on those who had given time and. trouble to the work. To-night a public tia meeting wiii be held in the schoolroom at 6.16, after which in the church tbe children will render a Service of Song entitled " The River Singers," which is said to be a very attractive piece of music. Solos, duetts, and choruses will be taken by the children from 6 years old and upwards. The adtaitsion to tea and Service of Song is 1/6, or Service of Song only 6d. The Rev W. H. Beck at the conclusion of the service last night thanked all those from whom be bad received any kindness both in the church and out o£ it, The monthly meeting of the Philosophical Society will be held in the Museum this evening, when Mr Wells will read a paper entitled. " A few suggestions on Matter and Energy." At a Committee meeting of the Nelson Bioyole Club on the Ist insf, it was decidpd to hold an ; eight mile road race for a medal to be presented by the Club. The race will he a handicap, end will be held on the 30th inst., entries closing on the 23rd inst. The course will be from Richmond to town, and

ihe.B'ar' will take.ph-ce at half past 3 t >'clock in the afternoon. Messrs E. Jackson, 1 md G. Shol'crass were elected handicappers. * Several memher- of the Club have already i expressed their in leu lion of competing in i ihis race. ' ] The College Cricket Club managed, to , secure another victory at Brightwater on Saturday last, but it was only after a hard -, struggle and a gallant effort by the borne team, who had much the worst on the conclusion oi an innings apiece. The Brightwater men only got as far as 34 in their first " hands," for 20 of which Hodder and "Extras" were responsible, Bennett and Ford proving very deadly on a rather difficult wicket, whicb, however, improved very considerably. Bennett was in great hitting form in the College innings, and, with Liitlejohn and Mules, was the only ono to make head against Lines' bowling. In the second innings Hodder played and hit remarkably well for 33, as did Harkness and Eden, but it must be allowed tbat the College fielding and catching gave away a large number of runs. Ford was the most successful bowler, but was expensive. With 51 to win the College entered on their second innings, and had it not been for a sterling 24 by Littlejohn they would have been in " Queer Street ;" as it was they pulled the match off by the not very large majority of four wickets, after a game that had proved most exciting and interesting. The total scores (we regiet that we cannot find room for them in detail) were :—Brightwater, 34 and 111 ; College, 95 and 47, with four wickets to fall. Thb special correspondent of the N.Z. Referee in his comments on the Nelson Races says: — "Before concluding my remarks on the meeting, I might point out to the officials of the club that they are the only club that impose on horseowners that abomination —a qualification fee of £2 — and also that it is not in accordance with the spirit of the new rules that £3 10s should be the amount of nomination and acceptance for a £40 hurdle race, five per cent being all that is allowable. Another complaint of owners is that the weights for the Cup and first day's handicaps are not made known until after general entries and nominations for the second day's handicaps are due. This is not fair to owners. With a competent handicapper there is no need to hold over the Gup weights until after the general entries are made. Should these little matters receive proper attention ere another meeting, the thanks of the owners would certainly be due to the Stewards, and the meeting would be rendered more popular with racehorse owners. I found Mr Wix, the Secretary, as courteous and obliging as ever, and, although there is still ample room for improvement in his method of conducting a race meeting, he undoubtedly devotes his whole energies to his duties." The sixth and final handicap of the Carbine Club's season was commenced at the Maitai Range on Tuesday morning last and concluded on Wednesday. The following are the names of the successful competitors : —
