COUNCIL.

The Council met at 2-30 p.m. Mr Buckley, replying to Mr Peacock, said that the Government saw no reason to alter the prison regulations in the case of remanded prisoners and prisoners awaiting trial. Mr Chamberlain's motion that the Government devise some means whereby coastal shipwrecks may be lessened, was lost. Ayes, 6 ; Noes, 29. Mr Menzies moved the second reading of the Bible Reading in Schools Bill. Mr Shrimski moved that the Bill be read that day six months. Mr Hart expressed the opinion that it would be better to send the matter to a Select Committee. Messrs Lahman, Whitaker, Grace, Brett, Scotland, and Swanson opposed the Bill,- and Messrs Barnicoat, Holmes, and Buckley spoke ia favor of it. The motion for the second reading was carried on a division. Ayes, 20 ; Noes, 17. Mr Buckley moved the second reading of the City Dnncdin Leasing Bill, which was agreed to. The Council adjourned till next day.
