LUCAS & SON. PRIZE STORY COMPETITION. THE PROPRIETORS of the Nelson Evening Mail will give a • PBIZE OF FIVE GUINEAS FOB THE BEST OEIGINAL STORY sent ia to the TSditor on or before October 31st, 1886, . by any person resident iv the Provincial District of Nelson. The attention of Competitors is drawn to the following CONDITIONS, as any story failiug.to comply with them will be disqualified ; — (1). The scene of the story must be laid in New Zealand. (2.) With ttie exception of this limit, the character of the story is entirely loft to the author. (3.) The story may be written by two or more people collaborating. (4.) It must be of such a length as to occupy not less than eight columns, aor more than sixteen columns of the Evbning Mail. Beyond eight columns, however, length will not of itself be considered a merit. Calculations may bo made on the basis of 1800 words to the column. (5.) It must be legibly written, with wide spaces between the lines, and on only one side of the paper, the several sheets of which must be numbered consecutively. <ti.) Every story sent in must bear a ' norn do plume/ and the author's real name and address must also be sent enclosed in an envelope with the 1 norn de plume ' outside. The envelope will only be opened if the story gains the prize. The author's name and address will then be published. (7.) The (successful story will belong solely to the Proprietors of the Evening Mail, aud will be published in their Christmas Supplement. (S.) Manuscripts will not be returned unless accompanied iv the first instance by stamped aud addressed envelope. (9.) The decision aa to the merit of the stories arrived at by the Editor of the Evening Mail, or by such person or Committee of Eersons as he may call in to assist him, must c considered by all competitors as final.
