BISHOP MOORHOUSE INTERVIEWED.

In an interview with a representative of the Pall Mall Gazette Bishop Moorhouse is re" ported to bave said, in reply to the question whether there was much drunkenness in Victoria, that there was among the English emigrants, but comparatively little among the English born population. The Bishop said that, -with regard to the Irish question, the details of Mr Gladstone's scheme were not known when he left Melbourne, but the feeling in the Colony was very strong in favor of the unity of the Empire, and Australian loyalty was intense. He expressed himself warmly in favor of Imperial federation, and said the Australian cricketers coming hero and our Home team going to the Colony, and England giving to Sydney such a Bishop as Dr Barry, no less than the employment of Australian citizen soldiers, tended to bind together the Mother Country and the Colony. He said that in England no idea existed of the great future before the Australian colonies, and he should be happy if he could make English statesmon realise the importance of colonial questions. In Melbourne they cared little for mere distinctions of party, and the colonists had been aggrieved at our treatment of such questions as the German occupation of New Guinea and of the French claims to the Hebrides. The Bishop said quite spontaneously, after speaking of the growth of the Colony, and particularly of Melbourne, since our representative saw it more than twenty years ago — mentioning a bank being erected at a cost of £100,000—" I drove up Kegent street to-day, and said to myself, is this the chief street of the capital of the Empire? I's buildings are mean indeed compared with those of Collins street. I was a little more favorably impressed," he added, smiling, "with Noithuinbeiland Venue.'
