THERE was considerable excitement in the town last night as the results of the polling in the various districts arrived and were posted up, in accordance with the promise we made yesterday, in shops whose proprietors kindly consented to keep open for the occasion. In. the Town and Waimea elections but little interest was manifested, both being regarded as a foregone conclusion, and the overwhelming* majority obtained by Mr Levestam surprised none of his supporters, however unexpected it might have been by the other side. In the Waimea there does not appear to have been a very keen interest, if we may judge by the number of those who voted, as only 568 recorded their votes out of nearly 1000 on the roll. The only contest about which there was the smallest excitement was that for Motueka. The first returns to be received were from the four principal rolling places, Motueka, Collingwood, Takaka. and Upper Moutere, aud these arrived all together, the result showing that Mr Kerr had a majority of four. Then the other returns dropped, in one after another, and now Mr Kerr was ahead and now Mr Hursthouse. the see-saw keeping Tip the excitement which had reached its highest pitch about 11 o'clock when the Dovedale poll was received and virtually settled the matter, ae it increased Mr Hursthouse's majority of six to 21 which placed the result beyond all doubt as there are not an present that number of voters at Wangapeka the only place from which the return had not been received. This has since come to hand, and swells Mr Hursthouse's majority by ten more. For ths Inangahna district there has been a severe contest. Shortly after 11 o'clock last; nighfi we received a telegram from our Reefton correspondent stating that the figures wer«, Menteath 724, Reeves 722, and that there was only one return to come in. This has since arrived nnd the result is that Mr B.eeves is defeated by a majority of 20. Mr O'Canor appears likely to defeat his old opponent, Mr Munro. for the Buller, but the full returns are not yet to hand.

Our Motupka correspondent telegraphed this afternoon: — There wns very great excitement here last nighh -when the returns began to come in. Kerr's supporters were intensely jubilant nt being in a majority until the Ngatimoti returns anired, when Hursthousa had a majority of eleven, and Kerr's men then began to subside. Much surprise is expressed at Kerr running Hursthouse so close. The Wangapeka returns are nob yet in. Great dissatisfactian is expreased ab the action of the Deputy Returning Officer in not telegraphing from Motupiko. A special messenger has been senfcto inquire the reason. [The returns have since been received]
