CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present : The Mayor, Grs Levien, Crewdson, Kounsell, Trask, Everett, Harley, and Cross. A letter was received from residents in Tipahi-street, complaining of the state of the ditch. The City Surveyor was instructed to have it cleaned out. Letters from Messrs Watters, Stewart, and O'Brien stating that additional work was necessary on the river bank near their property in Brook-street, were referred to the City Surveyor. A letter from Mr Brandford, complaining of the state of the ditch in Washington Valley, was referred to the City Surveyor. A letter was received from. Dr Skae, asking whether there was any any intention on the part of the Council to increase the water supply at the Lunatic Asylum, where the presure was very weak. The Surveyor's report called attention to the state of the flooring on the bridges near Mr Huddleston'a, also in Nile and Hardy streets. It was also stated that the piers, girders, and flooring of the Collingwood bridge were very rotten, and that in a short time it would be unsafe for traffic. The Mayor suggested that a Committee of the Council be appointed to examine the Collingwood bridge with Mr Lightfoot. — Cr Harley thought the Council were doing more damage to the bridge than anyone else by allowing their carts to cross it ao frequently two at a time. He thought the present was the time to borrow money for the. construction of a new bridge.— The Public Works Committee, together with .Crs Crewdson and Trask, were appointed to examine the bridge at once. The following tenders for clearing gorse from the streets were received; — No. I, J. Jennings find Co., £16 ;T. King, £20 5s 6d; Bray and Macdonald, £58. No. IT, Kicketti &Co , £23 10a; Jennings an I Co, £25 2s 61; W. Roberts, £49 10s; R. A very £63 18s 6. The tenders of Jennings and Co.; for No, I, and Ricketta and Qo. for No. II were accepted. An application from Patrick Murphy for a cab driver's license was referred to the Surveyor for him to make enquiries about the applicant. Cr Harley called attention to the state of the footpath and water tables in Cambria street and of the breakwater of the Brook street stream in tha Maitai, and asked when the concrete footpaths were to be completed. — The Mayor said the measurements for the latter were not yet completed. He thought they had no money at their disposal for such a purpose. With reference to Cambria a reet,Cr Traak thought Mr Junnings ought to be OBhamed of himself for allowing the nuisance of which he now co aplained to exist so long when be was luepector; — Cr Cross thought the Wood was too much of a weakness wiih soma of the members. It would be belter if they devoted a little more attention to other parts of the town.— Cr. Everett called attention to the properties in tha neighborhood of Tipahi atree'. The Surveyor was instructed to see to the Brook-street stream breakwater. Cr Orawdaon moved that no cabdriver's license be granted to boys uu.l.t twenty-one years of agd. A lot of boys had licenses who were quite unfit to hold them, and in driving they eu<iange T 6 • lives, as they had no power oV'.r M>eir horses, Cr Trask seconded the resolution. Boy cab-diivers were becoming too general altogether in Nelson. Cr.
