A DISCRIMINATING FIRE.
Dcnedin, Tuesday. At one o'clock this morning the Athenaeum was discovered to be on fire, the flames having a strong hold in the room uqder the library and having come up through the floor. Four powerful jets of water were soon brought to bear which confined the fire to one building. The escape of the books was very wonderful. The reference library haa not received any damage, the roof keeping off the water. Books of travels, and science, and political and other valuable works escaped without damage, but the novels and old books were burned and a lot on the top shelves next the roof, while those below are slightly damaged by the water The destruction of poetical worka is the only serious injury. The portion of the building destroyed was insured for £2000 in the New Zealand Company and that covers all the loss.
