A stormy meeting was held a£ Kiccarton last night, in reference to the dismissal by the Education Board of Mr Wilson, a teacher a: the Riccarton school, on the ground that he declined to instruct the children in drill. Mr Wilson declared that the primary cause of dismissal was his refusal to allow the Rev. C. Bowen, Commissioner, to introduce religious instruction into the school. This was not supported by the facts before the meeting, and the majority of those present strongly declined to accept it as true. A fire broke out at 6 o'clock this morning at the Hereford Boarding House in Durham Street South, which completely destroyed the building. The Brigade were quickly on the spot, and their exertions confined the fire to one building. There were a large number of boarders in the house, all of whom escaped. Part of the furniture was saved. The furniture was insured for £150 in the Transatlantic. The building was also insured.
