The Lyttelton left Blenheim for Nelson at noon to-day. The Murray at Westport ig afasfc prisoner. She reports a north-west gale and heavy sea. The Wallace has not reached Westport. She is doubtless taking shelter in the bay. The Patea sailed for Patea at i 1 a.m. yesterday with a full cargo, consisting principally of timber. The Lady Barkly sails for Golden Bay at 3 p.m. to-morrow. The Grafton will arrive here from Wei* lington to-morrow, and sail for Westport and Greymonth at 6 p.m. The Taiaroa sailed for Taranaki and Mannkau shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived at Onehunga to-day. The Pelorus sailed for Havelock on Saturday afternoon. It is contemplated to make fortnightly trips to that port in f nture. The Wellington leaves Wellington this afternoon, will arrive here to-morrow morning, and sail for Picton and Wellington at 4 p.m. The Charles Edward had her boiler and engines tested on Saturday af teraoon, when everything was found to wo>k satisfactorily. The steamer took a tnrn outside the harbor, and a good rate of speed was got ont of her. For some time past little or nothing has been heard about the operations which were commenced for getting the steamer Taupo off the rock on which she lies wrecked, and from what we can learn by inquiry, as little seems to have been done towards floating the vessel. It is now the opinion of those qualified to judge, that the fine but ill-fated steamer will never more be seen in our waters, but that she will "leave her bones " on the reef where in an evil hour she so unfortunately struck.—iVejo Zeaiavder. A French barque arrived to night from San , Francisco, says the Auckland Star. She is on her way from California to Lyttelton with ' a cargo of barley, and has put ia here owing ! to the pumps having become choked, it is believed, through the barley breaking loose. She is 65 days out from San Francisco. It \ ia expected that she will be able to resume .her voyage in a Sew days. The following changes are about to take place among the officers of the Union Company's boats :— -Captain Carey, of the Kotorua, will go Home to bring out the Te Anau: Captain Tozer, of the Albion, will take charge of the Rotorua; Mr F. Garrard, at present chief officer of the Ringarooma, will command the Albion; Mr Irwin, late chief officer of the Arawata, will command the Claud Hamilton; Captain M'Gee, late of the Wellington, has gone as chief officer of the Ringarooma, to gain experience in the Melbourne trade. Captain Carey will go Home by the steamer which leaves Melbourne on the 12th July, and the Te A.nau is expected ' to leave London oa the 10th October. The Rotomahana will leave London on the 6th August, under the auspices of the colonial ' line, to which the Hankow and Whampoa belong. She will most likely be a full ship In cargo and passengers, as by the Union Company's latest advices a number of cabins bad been booked four months before the Te Anau'a projected departure. The New Zealandcr of Wednesday gives fcbe following account oi & gallant rescue: — As the gig of the ship Pleiades was returning from shore, under the charge of the second officer, with a cask of water, yesterday afternoon; she sailed under the bows of the Bhip, and while attempting to gybe overturned, precipitating the occupants, four in number, into the water. The captain, from the poop, and the chief mate, from the forecastle, at once seized lines and life buoys and jumped overboard to the rescue, the former making for a steerage passenger, and, after passing * a Jme, swam to the boat and put it right, and then seized and secured the' cask. He was m the water over half an hour, and when hauled up was very nearly senseless, but under the vigorous rubbing of the doctor, and sundry glasses hot, was sufficiently restored to give our reporter the facts as related. The chief officer, Mr James, saved two seamen unable to swim, and behaved in a moat gallant manner.
