The Municipal Corporation have requested the Government to proclaim Monday the 2Cth instant a public holiday instead of Saturday the 24th. The adjourned case against Henry Anderson of the Chronicle for assaulting Easby, blindmaker, came on again this morning. The case for the prosecution having concluded, the counsel for the defence proposed that the Magistrate should hear the cross action entered by Anderson before dealing with the case, hut Mr Mansford said that, no matter what were the features of the other case, the evidence in that just heard was sufficient to warrant him in committing the prisoner for trial, which was accordingly done. Anderson reserved his defence. In the cross action for assault, raised by Anderson against Easby, there was no evidence brought forward for the defence, and the Magistrate said he could take no cognisance of the evidence taken in the previous case and was about to commit Easby also, when his counsel took objection and asked to be allowed to call evidence for the defence. This was granted, and the case was accordingly adjourned till Tuesday next Mr Hunter, M.H.R., and Mr Hutchinsonj ex-Mayor, were theonly candidates nominated to-day for the Mayoralty. The Tararua, from Melbourne, experienced a heavy gale from Russell, arriving at Auckland at 10 am. to-day. The only items of Australian news she brings are that eight of the rowing crew leave for Sydney to-day. The schooner Margaret Chessie, from Melbourne, was wrecked on the north beach, near the Castle, and Captain, Townsend was drowned. The crew were saved.
