Hokitika, Tuesday night. Ryan'a trial for murder was on all day The witnesses examined were Mrs Daniels,

wife of Daniels, who is supposed to have been murdered; Walter Daniels, son of the same, and W. Galvin, who identified Daniels' watch; also Peter Gourdie, who identified the body, and Mary Downie. The evidence was much the same as that given in the Magistrate's Court, but a few stronger points of evidence have been elicited. The trial is likely to last three or four days more. There are still about- twenty witnesses to b'e examined. Wellington, Tuesday night. In the Supreme Court to-day, Jacobsen alias Count Mouravieff was tried for obtaining money under false pretences. There were two charges. The prisoner, who was defended by Mr Barton, was found guilty, but sentence was deferred. Frederick Catt'ling, for an indecent assault upon a young girl at the Lower Hutt, was found guilty, and remanded for sentence. The Grand Jury threw out the bill against Walter Ockenden for robbery. A test was made of the water at the waterworks to-day, ond it was found that afc halfpast nine this morning there was 12ffc 9insin the new reservoir, and at half-past two there was only 12 feet. The engineer of the waterworks finds on testing the volume of the stream that supplies the reservoir that the hydraulic lifts and machinery afc present in use in Wellington would absorb the entire amount, leaving none for domestic purposes. The total number of acres of the Ardington estate sold last week was 9456, which realised £42,600 or an average of a little over £4 10s per acre, including the township, the 'suburban sections, and the rural land. The Warnstead included 33 acres, that brought £12 6s or £37 3s per acre. The Judge said that he would not inflict a flogging, and would consider the term of impiisonment. — Wawai Papae was acquitted on a charge of rape on Mary Puri. Auckland, Wednesday. Sir G. Grey has gone to Kawau for a few days to recruit his health. The Alburnia Mine has declared a dividend of five shillings per share. The Governor will shortly visit the hot springs at Rotorua. At a meeting of the South British Insurance Company, held on Monday, the Directors recommended a dividend of 15 per cent per auuum. The outward mail steamer is signalled. Mrs Warren pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing goods and money. Mrs Lowrie> pleaded not guilty to a charge of arson. H.M.S. Wolverine takes the Governor North this week.
