Thursday, At a meeting of shareholders in the Loan and Investment Company of New Zealaud yesterday it was resolved to accept the proposal of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand to purchase the business and securities of the first named Company for £1000, in addition to the amount of the securities and accrued interest. The Italian Opera Company opened to a crowded house last night with II Trovatore. The performance was a great success, and both papers speak highly of the various artistes.

Friday. .bor some weeks past a very animated correspondence has been carried on between the Governor and Sir George Grey on the question of a dissolution, which the latter has been urging the Governor to grant at the close of the present session. The Governor declined, whereupon Sir George took up the position that the Governor is bound to take the advice of his constitutional advisers on this as on all other questions, ;and that the Premier of a colony could demand a dissolution whenever he chose. The Governor, on the other hand, maintains that the power of dissolution is the special prerogative of the Crown, and informs Sir George that he, as the Crown's representative, will exercise such prerogative at his discretion. The correspondence will be laid before the two Houses.

The City of New York which left Auckland on Oct24th arrived at San Francisco on Nov Hth. The steamer has arrived at lort Darwin from Banjoewatrjie, but owing to the land line to Port Darwin having been down messages are only coming through today. °

At a meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday, it was proposed by Mr M'Caughan, and carried unanimously, " That the Government be requested to vest in the Council power to nominate two members of the Southland Waste Lands Board, provision to be made for this in the new Act.
