The R^v.Mr BMuerman i what Wore the ordinary services of the Church but Evangelistic services. Another Gospel than the Gospel of Christ was preached. Dr Stuart bad listened wUh; pain to;, tbe jeremiads from the lot of speaker-si 'tTELq recommended the malcdhtents* anxong the Synod to encoarage a . spirit u '~ of charity. The Rev Mr Suth^and said be had declined to furnish a return of the state of religion because, according to the printed questions, Jhey wanted to know about how many persons bad been converted in each district during the year. The Rev Mr Ryley said it'wes difficult to know whether they (the speakers) were on the road to heayenor hell. Ha charged; the Eev MrShtUerland with having added insult to neglect in not for warding the required rejura. : . ; The Re,y.Mr Sutherland could •*. not allow himself to be charged with having added -insult to iojiury. Some of the queries issued by the committee were frivolous. -The Rev Mr Ryley held tbat the Rev Mr Sutherland was going deeper iuto the mire, and that bis position was 'anything 'but enviable. He (the Rev Jilr JRyiey)*!. expressed his willingness to resign, so that the committee could have the 'benefit of Mr Sutherland's extraordinary abilities. Tbe Rev Mr Kirkiand deprecated the unchristian, tone, the .discussion bad taken. .The Moderator, the /Rev Mr Gow, succeeded in throwing oil on the 1 troubled' waters.
