Clayton, qf phis city, has just invented a new kind of auger at Nydd, Eng land, which is so constructed as to bore no fewer than ten different s*zed holes. He is about patenting it, and will bring forward some to this colony. Another brother of Mr Clayton, residing in Ripley, Leeds, has, within the last month or two, inve ited and patented a new apparatus for sweeping and rolling lawns, which is said to be of great utility, and is sold at a remarkably low figure. We have no doubt the apparatus will sell to advantage in this colony/ Free, secular, and compulsory education is entrusted to curious administrators in some instances. A visiting member of one of the School Boards in Victoria recently left the following memento of his inspection in the visitor** book:— "lvistpd thiss schul house too day alopg with, Mr ~ rr ~, apd; fqncjs. The bell presented by Mr Henry Seybert to Philadelphia has been placed iv Independence Hall, and was rung for the first time ou the 4th of July. It weighs 13,0001b5, counting lOOQlbs for each of tlie originai 13 colonies. In making it, looibs was taken from each of the four following cannons: -Ono gun captured from B,ucgoype at Saratoga, one used under Gates at' the tiattle of Bemis Heights, one from Union army, and one from the Confederate forces at Gettysburg.
