COUNTY COUNCIL NOMINATIONS.
MOTUEKA. The nomination of candidates for the representation of the Motueka Riding in tbe County Council took place at Wakefield today, when the following gentlemen were nominated:— Mr Joshua Bird, by William Wratt aud Richard Chattock ; Mr Edward Baigent, by Rob«rt Eden and Robert Boddington • Mr William White, by John Jerris and George Holland. The Reluming Officer (Mr Orchard) at noon declared that the above-named gentlemen had been duly nominated as candidates for the representation of the Motueka Riding of the Waimea Shire Council, and stated that the polling would take place on the 22nd instant at Wakefield, Spring Grove, Foxhill, and Dovedale, and asked the respective candidates if they had any address to make to the electors present. Mr Bird was the first to respond, and he said that he had really nothing to say then, except that if elected he would do his best for the interests of his district. Mr Baigent, who followed him, said that he had merely allowed himself to be nominated for the purpose of keeping out another gentleman who he expected would have contested the election, and that in all probability he would retire from the oontesi before the day of election. Mr W. White said that he had come forward at the request of a large number of ratepayers as a candidate for election. ,As Chairman of the Waimea Road Board he thought he had a better chance of knowing the wants of the district than a mau who took no part iv public affairs, and that if elected he would do his best for the district, and would endeavor to curtail expenses as much ns possible, He considered all offices in connection with the Ceuuty Council should be unpaid, with the exception of clerk, and he would do his hest to see justice done to the district be represented in the way of money matters. RIV/AKA. For the Riwaka Riding Mr Macmahon was the only candidate proposed. He is therefore declared duly elected.
