Provincial Council.— The Provincid Secretary has given notice tbat he will to-morrow evening move certain resolutions, affirming fche desirability of granting to a Company undertaking the construction of a through line from Foxhill toßrunnertoji, leases of the Brunnerton and Greymouth, and Nelson and Foxhill railways, and also of the Brunner coal mine. Accident to the Ladybibd. — A strange aud most unaccountable accident happened to the steamer Ladybird this morning. Just as she was passing through the narrow entrance between tbe Arrow Rock and the Boulder Bank the blades of her screw snapped off short, and had not the engineers been at their posts ready to shut off steam at a moment's notice, some serious injury must inevitably have been sustained by tbe engines. Fortunately she had sufficient way on her to allow of her answering the helm and entering the harbor, and the boats were then at once lowered and she was towed up to the wharf. She is now on the hard near the Custom House Hotel where a spare screw that she had with her will be shipped, and she will proceed southward to-morrow morning. Gold Exports.— The goldfields of the colony are looking up again. During the quarter ended 3lsfc March last, the quantity of gold exported was -194;422 ounces, valued at £732,063, while the returns for the March quarter of 1872 showed a production of only 154,997 ounces, valued at £608,022. The greatest increase is in the province of Auckland, which exported 53,678 ounces during last quarter, compared with 32,587 ounces during the correspondent quarter of last year. There is a slight falling off in the yield from Westland. The Nelson yield shows a slight increase, the amount exported during the quarter just ended having been 32,204 ounces, valued at £128,816 against 27,908 ounces of the value of £111,632 for the correspon ding period of last year. Otago's exports are valued at £301,412. The Wesleyans of Christchurch are about to get up a bazaar. £700 is the amount named by one of the promoters as the expected result. The bankers and.bank clerks at Oamaru. had during a week no less than five holidays — the two race days, Good Friday, and Easter Monday and Tuesday. Libel.*— A libel case, Rees v. Ward, proprietor of the Kakapunda Guardian, was heard lately at ihe Police Court, Adelaide. The article charged Mr Rees, who was a candidate for the Curra, with being a hypocrite, gambler, drunkard, and blasbphemer, while pretending to temperance and piety. The case broke down because counsel did not call informant or witnesses to prove the malice.
