j for the plaintiff iv amount claimed, with costs. Adams and Kingdon v. Alfred Joseph Brown. An action brought to recover 31/ Os 4d. the amount of an account due to the plaintiffs for legal assistance, etc., by the defendant, an insolvent. It appeared that tho plaintiffs had been paid 20/ 17s 3d on a taxed account of 46/ 12s 7d by. the Inspector of Bankruptcy, under the impression that it was a payment in full. The plaintiffs' clerk, however, Mr Fletcher, remembered telling Mr Kingdon . at the time of the payment of the money, that Mr Adams would not receive, that amount (20. 17s 3d) in full, and Mr Kingdou then struck out the words' 'in ' full' before giving the receipt. Of the whole account 20/ Is lid were costs out of pocket. The defendant had paid 5/ 5s and 17s costs into Court. Judgment for plaintiffs, for 28/ 18s 4d and costs, payI able at two, four, and six mouths. Morris Lyon Marks v. James Watkins and Henry Douglas Jacksou. — Mr Pitt for plaintiff, Mr H. The plaintiff claimed a dividend of 3/ 8s 4d per share on 10 shares in the Nelson and Marlborough Coast Steam Navigation Company (Limited), of which the defendants were liquidators, making a total of 34/ 3s 4d. In this case the plaintiff' claimed his dividend, as stated above, and the defendants pleaded a set-offfor freight of goods from Nelson in 1865, due by turn to the company, with interest on call not paid when due, making a total of 34/ 17s Id and thus leaving a balance due to the ■ defendant of 13s 9d. The annual meeting of the Nelson Fire Brigade will be held this evening at the Trafalgar Hotel, at 7 o'clock, when the election of the various officers of the Brigade for the ensuing year will take place, and other important business will be transacted. ' We have been informed that a robbery of clothes that had been left out to dry, took place at Stoke, on Tuesday night. A stranger was observed prowling about the village on Thursday night, but though twice watched, he managed to escape. We learn that the resolution arrived at by the Board of Works to cut down the picturesque old tree standing on the banks of tbe Maitai, near the Hardy-street bridge, and known as the Buckatere Tree, has been received generally with much disfavor, and that strenuous efforts are being made with a view to its preservation. The tree is the only remaining relic of the bush which once existed on that side of the city, and ?s not unnaturally regarded with peculiar interest by those amongst us whose memories extend back to the primeval state of the settlement. The Board were, we understand, induced to arrive at this resolution by representations of its present dangerous state, which we believe to be altogether groundless, or at all events exaggerated. The anniversary dinner of the Fire Brigade will take place at the Trafalgar Hotel on Thursday evening next, and we understand that the Provincial Secretary has kindly consented to take the chair on the occasion, the Chairman of the Board of Works occupying the vice-chair. The dinner is likely to be very numerously attended, and will constitute an appropriate inauguration of the first year's operations of this most useful corporation. The Provincial Engineer, with the Assistant Provincial Engineer, Mr A. Dobson, arrived in town this morning overland from the West Coast. Mr Jellyman's tender should have, been £4 10s, not £5 lis as printed in our Board of Works report on Saturday. The clipper . schooner Isabella arrived here yesterday, having left Manukau on Saturday last. The New Zealand Herald of the 7th instant, noticing the departure iof: this favorite little clipper, states that the remarkable passages which she has made since she was launched in September last surpasses anything on record, and proyes what a sailing vessel may accom- . ** 'p'lish when in command of such nien as Captain .Burijell; ; No ;less than ; twelve '■' tijips. The Isabella iha^'^^^^^cq. m_t_dation for passengers, . her cabin : being fitted up with all the moat recent improvements; in fact she possesses all the luxuries which may be expected during a. sea voyage, and her master, Captain Burrell, has already become a general favorite in the trade. We have lately. recorded several instances of princely rounificence. on the part of public and private individuals; some of which, it is to be regretted, were mere rumors or inventions.; Now we have ;-, to. add to the genuine list the name of John Henderson, Esq., of Park, near ' Renfrew, who was one of the. merchant princes of Glasgow. He died on. the Ist May,, 1867, aged 85 ; and for very m^ny years of his life his contributions to benevolent aud l-eligious societies, and'munificent private charities, amounted to between £40,000 and £50,000 annually. The Grey River Argus '.states that a reply had been received by the Honorary Secretary of the Greymouth Annexation Committee from the Provincial Secretary of Nelson, acknowledging the receipt qf a letter from the committee on the sub- • ject of the annexation of the Grey district north of the Tereniakau to the Province of Nelson, and stating that this subject would be brought before the Executive Council without delay. It also says that the committee propose to send a delegate or delegates in charge of the petition, in order that every possible aid may be enlisted both at Nelson and Wellington, and suggests that the delegates should convene a public meeting at Nelson on their way to Wellington, and get if possible, a vote of approval of the annexation i schejne. ; ;Tp 'take for granted that the Nelson -Government will give its formal support to j.the ■committee, and that all that the delegates "willhaye. to, do! at Wellington will be to secure .is;\l/est man they can obtain to. present the petition. Mr" J. C. Richmond's name is mentioned as the most suitable sponsor to .select, as being connected with this province, though not a representative of it, and as a member of the Executive, able to exercise more influence than a private member. It is supposed that the votes of the Otago members could be obtained,, and little doubt is entertained that by dint of the exertion of a little tact sufficient support could be secured to ensure the granting of. the petition. We understand from private information that very considerable excitement prevails at Greymouth in reference to this subject, and that the requisite measures are being vigorously prosecuted. Information has been received from Wellington that Mr Hall has resigned the office of Postmaster-General, and it is understood that he will be succeeded by Major Richardson. | It is estimated that the cost while in Session of the House .of Representatives, is £100 a day, and that each member attending costs the country £150 per annum. A Wellington telegram in the Grey River Argus of the sth inst., says that it is announced from Auckland that a great indignation meeting has been held at Karaka (Thames gold-field) . relative to the exaggerated reports published by the Auckland papers concerning; the, diggings. Amotion has been carried in the House of Representatives ' That a return be laid on the table of the House of the number of cases heard before the several Resident Magistrates and Wardens on each of the gold-fields of the colony, from the . 30th June, 1866, to the 30th June, 1867.' The object of the motion is the reduction of the number of Magistrates and Wardens in certain districts. -,- ~- The Grey River Argus of. the 12th inst. says: — We learn from one of our Hokitika contemporaries that another very desperate attempt at escape, was made on Monday morning at the Hokitika Gaol, at the cemetery, by a man named Harley, who was undergoing a sentence of twelve months' imprisonment, with hard labor. When the prisoner was observed -by the warders running in the direction "of the bush, three shots were fired at him, one of which, took effect, and he suddenly dropped to the earth. -On being- picked up he was found to have been struck by a bullet, a large portion of the skull being completely denuded ,}of the: flesh. _)r Young was immediately sent for^ and , arrived _ with all possible haste, when the • man's injuries were .attended to. jtt ! was found on close examination t_^ ( they wfei*© noi likely ii. -prove fetal.
