THE SUPPOSED MURDER AT THE MAUNGATAPU.

This morning a man was brought before the Resident Magistrate, on suspicion of being one of the four' men wlie were seen on the road to the Deep Creek, the day the storekeepers from Canvas Town, were seen there also. Mr. Shallcrass asked the Magistrate to remand him for a week, in. order that he might procure additional evidence. The Magistrate said he would first hear all the evidence that the police had to adduce. William Charles Davis said : I am a miner from Deep Creek, where I have been working 10 months. I saw the prisoner there on Sunday the 10th instant, at Felix Matthews' place. He was in conversation with Dudley, one of the missing men. The prisoner, to my knowledge, left the Deep Creek on the following Monday morning, with Harvey and two other mates. Harvey had two guns, and left the party before they got to .Canvas Town. I donot knowwhere Harvey went or what road lie took. I did not see the prisoner till I saw him in the W&katu last night. No one else left the Deep Creek that morning except the prisoner's party aad the other party. The latter are now in Nelson. The prisoner declined asking any questions. He

said the reason' for leaving with the party was that they might show him the nearest track. Auguste Hardi, a Frenchman, said : lam a miner und knew the last witness at Deep Creek. I saw the prisoner there in Felix's place. I saw him corneiu on Sunday. He had no swag with him. I saw him at Nelson last night at the Wakatu^Hotel. He was in the bar. ' Mr. Shallcrass said there was evidence to connect the prisoner with the other three suspected men, but the parties who would give it were at. the Pelorus. The prisoner declined to put any questions to this ■witness. The Magistrate said, as this may turn ouf to be a serious affair, I shall remand the prisoner for a week, till further evidence is obtained. a The Prisoner: What evidence do you want ? I don't deny leaving Deep Creek. The Magistrate : I shall remand yon for all that. The prisoner was then remanded.
