LOCAL NEWS. RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

[Before J. Potnter, Esq., R. M.] j This Day. returning from a ball. Thomas Stewart was complained of for disturbing the peace, this morning, in that highly tranquil and loyal district, the Toi-Toi-Valley. It appeared that this morning when the citizens of Toi-Toi were wrapped in profound slumber, the defendant demanded admittance

at a certain house, in tones that alarmed the inmate for his safety. The aid of the police was invoked, who on arriving found the defendant exhausted either by hammering the door, or overpowered by the champagne in which he had been indulging, and lying on the threshold in' the arms of " tired nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleep." The defendant who looked as though he were suffering a recovery, was thus addressed by his worship. What have you to say to this charge of being drunk and disturbing the peace ? Defendant : Well, your worship, I had been to a ball and was returning home. I called at a lady's house, as I thought, to get a little sleep. It seems that I made a mistake, and called at another gentleman's house. His Worship : Were you drunk ? Defendant : Well, your worship, I was a little on that way. His Worship : Then I shall fine you 10s. and costs ; and I recommend you to look out, or I shall be obliged to bind you over to keep the peace. Nelson College. — Four Candidates are already in the field, offering to fill the vacancies in the Board of Governors for Nelson College. The gentlemen are Dr. Irvine, Messrs. J. Sharp, F. Kelling, and J. H. Levien. There are two vacancies, and it is satisfactory to find that so great an interest is taken in the prosperity of the institution. Possibly other candidates may yet offer themselves : at any rate there is no lack of willingness on the part of men of influence to serve the College, whose management will, it is hoped, receive a new impulse from the life which will be imparted to it at the approaching election of Governors. Weights and Measures. — A correspondent whose letter is too long for insertion, writes to complain, that he has several times discovered the articles he has purchased, to be below the authorised standard weight. We refer our correspondent to the Inspector .of -Weights and Measures, there being such an officer, we believe, in the town. There can be no doubt that any well grounded complaint that reaches the ears of this official, will lead to an examination in the quarter where it is most needed. The Concert, this Evening. — We again draw atteiition to the concert that is to be o-iven this evening, in behalf of the sufferers by the late flood, and we do so on the ground that the public should show its appreciation of local musical efforts, as well as assist ia the promotion of a most laudable charity.
