Out and About in Kaiapoi

OUTBREAK OF FIRE Tho Kaiapoi Fire Brigade received its first call for some, time, when, fire broke out in Mr I. Shaw’s fish shop through the boiling fat catching alight. A serious outbreak was prevented by the presence of mind of the driver of a passing lorry, who subdued the flames with some sand he had on the lorry. The services of the Brigade were therefore not required. SAILING RACE The second race for the Crozier Cup was held by the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club on Sunday over two rounds of a ooure in a strong north-easterly wind. There were eleven starters, the race being run on the Mark Foy system. Results were: Matarere (E. Wright), handicap 6£m., time 50m. 55., 1.; Dottrell (C. Banks), scr., 47m. 225., 2; Cordelia (K. Whitmore), 4m. 50sec., JJ. W.C.T.U. The president, Mrs A. Stocking, presided over the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Opening with singing and devotions, the meeting proceeded with the election of officers for the coming year, as follows:—President, Mrs A. Stocking; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames J. Barnard, E. Baker, W. H. A. Vickery, and Miss S. E. Evans; secretary, Miss L. Hamel; corresponding secretary, Mrs Chapman; hall committee, Mesdames Stocking and W. Keetley. Afternoon tea was served, after which Mrs Lowry, of Christchurch, gave a talk based on the parable of the Good Samaritan: robbers of today, cause and effect. At the close of her 1 address Mrs Stocking and Mrs Barnard moved a vote of thanks for Mrs Lowry’s presence at the meeting and her graphic description of those forces which were robbing men and women in all lands today.

FAREWELL AFTERNOON A very enjoyable afternoon was held at the residence of Mrs H. Mclntosh, Beach Road, Kaiapoi, when Mrs McIntosh and members of the Plunket Committee entertained Mrs G. Greenwood and Mrs L. C. B. Fuldseth, who are leaving Kaiapoi to reside in Christchurch, also Mrs L. J. Parnham, who' has resigned from the office of treasurer of the Plunket Society after six years in that office. Each guest was presented with a gift. All returned thanks. Competitions and golf croquet were played during the afternoon, the winners being Mesdames R. C. Stewart, H. H. Blackwell, and E. Gray. Mrs Vickery thanked Mrs Mclntosh on behalf of those present. CHRISTMAS BONUS FOR RELIEF MEN The Government has decided to pay a Christmas bonus of £2 to married men and £1 to single men actually engaged under any of the following schemes:—Scheme 5, employed on a rational basis; men on sustenance; Scheme 13 (special full time workers). The men are also to receive two weeks’ holiday pay, but in the case of Scheme 13 workers the men will be transferred to two weeks’ sustenance, ending on January 8, 1938. RIFLE SHOOTING The third handicap cup shoot was held by the Defence Rifle Club on Saturday. The conditions were eleven shots at 500 yards and ten at 600. The results were as follows:

FOURBALL BOGEY GOLF MATCH A four-ball bogey match was played at Kaiapoi on Saturday afternoon. The best cards returned were: — E. J. Corcoran and A. W. Leithead 7 up; R. G. Rainey and J. SALVATION ARMY YOUNG PEOPLE’S ANNIVERSARY The young people’s anniversary services of the Kaiapoi Salvation Army Corps were held on Sunday. All the services were in the capable hands of Y.P.S.M. Rundle, who has charge of the city Salvation Army Sunday school. His subjects were “Five Sharp Arrows” and “Wells of the Bible,” and the addresses, illustrated by working models, held tjbo interest of young and old. The anniversary celebrations concluded on Monday evening with a concert programme by the children, the items being as follows: Company song, “Marching Along”; prayer, Y.P.S.M. Rundle; Bible reading, Secretary Hamel; band selections, boys; dumbell drill, Life Saving Guards; recitations, Raymond Cross, Clifford Cross, Tommy
