High School Notes

TENNIS

Oil Tuesday afternoon six members of the High School tennis team were invited by the Itangiora Lawn Tennis Club to play the annual match between the school and the club, A very enjoyable afternoon was spent by everyone. The match resulted in a decisive win for the club. Many of the games were long and hard, and will prove beneficial to our play. BOOK REVIEW “Under the Greenwood Tree,” by Thomas Hardy, is a story of rustic life in England in the 19th Century. The saying that Hardy displayed an intimate knowledge of the female heart is very true, for his portrayal of Fancy Day, the village schoolmistress, is excellent. Thomas Leaf, the village idiot, although a very pathetic character, shows unsuspected cunning, and is used by Hardy to provide much amusement. The choir also provides humour, although a touch of pathos appears when they are forced to give way to the more modern organ. . Throughout the story Hardy shows his love of detail, as well as his ability to describe tHe various moods of nature.
