Out and About in Rangiora

PERSONAL Mr N. H. J. Trustruin has been transferred from Horopito Post Office to Petone.

Mr H. A. Bennett is at present in Wellington, where he is representing Eyre County Council at the annual conference of the New Zealand Counties Association. He will later spend a fortnight’s holiday in the Waikato district

Mr C. C. Banfield has returned to Wellington, after spending a holiday with his parents, Mr and Mrs J. C. Banfield, River Road, Rangiora. Miss Ngaio Prestney and Miss Betty Watkins, both members of the Rangiora Ladies’ Physical Culture Hockey Club, left yesterday to represent Canterbury at the annual New Zealand women’s hockey tournament at Invercargill on Saturday. This is the fifth year in succession that Miss Prestney has been a Canterbury representative at the tournament.

Mr J. E. Strachan, principal of the Rangiora High School, is at present in Wellington attending a conference of educational authorities. While there he will interview the Minister for Education in connexion with the proposed community hall at the School.

Mr Bert Walker has been spending his holidays with his parents, Mr and Mrs R. J. Walker, Ashley Street. Mr Walker has been transferred from Pleasant Point Post Office to Albury, South Canterbury.

CARD AFTERNOON

At the fortnightly card afternoon held at the United Club’s pavilion yesterday, in aid of funds for the croquet section, the prize-winner was Mrs E. D. Rowe, and Mrs A. Prestney held the lucky number. Hostesses for the afternoon were Musdames A. Shankland and Bennett.

GOLF CLUB The Canadian foursome postponed from the 21st will be played on the Rangiora links tomorrow. Players will arrange their own partners and the draw will be made at the club house. '

FURTHER PLAY IN BILLIARDS TOURNAMENT

Good progress is being made with the

North Canterbury Billiards Tournament being played at present. The last match in the second round of the senior competition was closely contested, G. Pulley beating P. J. Pulley 300 to 298. In the third round C. Watkins beat D W. L. Mehrtens 300-247. The other semi-final, C. Pulley v. G. Pulley, is to be played tomorrow night. In the second round of the junior competition, H. Manning 150 beat W. Stephens 144, and R. Jones 150 beat C. Butters 114.

UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES With six men starting work on Monday at Waikuku Beach under the Employment Promotion Scheme, the number of men working under the No. 5 Scheme next week will be only 24. Those eligible for sustenance number 116.

During the week the officer in charge (Mr H. M. Chappell) has received three fresh registrations. One man has been placed in permanent employment and two in temporary employment.

HOME LEAGUE An interesting descriptive and instructive talk was given to the Salvation Army Home League yesterday by Mrs L. M. King on her recent tour to places of interest in the North Island.

DRUIDS' LODGE The quarterly summoned meeting of the Druids’ Lodge was held on Monday evening, Bro. J. James presiding. Three candidates were initiated, and three proposed. The Lodge was in favour of the Grand Lodge continuing its annual Grand Lodge sessions as at present, instead of the proposed biannual meeting. The *ick pay for the fortnight, and the quarterly accounts, were passed for payment. The Lodge accepted an invitation from the Trafalgar Lodge to a social evening on September 7. Arrangements were made for the entertainment of members of the three Lodges visiting next Lodge night. After the Lodge closed, members of the R.S.A. arrived and played a pingpong tournament.
