ASHLEY COUNTY

COUNCIL MEETING—The Board’s representative on the District Highways Council advised Thursday’s meeting of the Ashley County Council that in view of the representations made by the chairman to the Board on its last yisit, a charge of 37/- per day for the hire of the Reo truck had been approved as from April 1, an increase of 3/- per day. Dobson’s Road The District Engineer, Public Works Department, advised that it was regretted .that no further expenditure could be considered for works on Dobson’s Road in this financial year. The Council decided to vote the sum of £3O from its general account in order to carry out necessary works prior to winter. Grant to King’s Memorial Fund The Council voted the sum of £ls towards the King George the Fifth National Memorial Fund for the permanent establishment of children’s health camps, members heartily supporting the object. Tree Planting on Gorse Areas The Director-General, Department of Agriculture, forwarded a copy of the report of the survey of the gorse-in-fested areas in the County, and asked to be advised what action the Council is prepared to take in furthering the matter. It was decided that it was too large a matter for .the Council to handle alone, and the clerk was directed to approach the committee set up at the conference held some time ago, convened on behalf of the North Canterbury Advisory Committee on tree planting by the Canterbury Progress League, with a view to having another conference of interested authorities at an early date, preferably in Rangiora. In the meantime, the Department’s report is being circulated among members of the Council. Outside Work The Supervisor (Mr C„ A. Belcher) reported that during March the re-for-mation of Carr’s Road was continued, 274 yards of metal being placed on this length. The grader had been engaged for 16 days on the higways, patrolling the entire length prior to the holidays, same being in good order for holiday traffic. From observation the roads carried an enormous volume of traffic over the holidays and suffered severely, being heavily corrugated and ridged. The grader was now operating full time, and it was hoped that the usual good state would soon be regained. The Lees Valley surfaceman reported that the Gorge Road was in good order except for a short length which required metalling. Arising out of the reports, it was decided to extend the sincere thanks of the Council to the Automobile Association for its attention and promptness in supplying new bridge name plates, road signs, and direction notices, etc., throughout the County. The financial report showed receipts for March as £2440/17/8, and that the Council completed its financial year with a credit balance of £791/7/7.
