RADIO NOTES

[By LISTENER] FROM 3YA TO-NIGHT The theme programme at 8 o'clock is "Famous Rivers—the Nile," .in which a trip down this old river will be portrayed, the memory being stirred by an appropriate musical background. The narrator is Mr Patrick L. C. BellSyer. Surely there are other theme programmes that can be presented! This one has beeni broadcast several times already, and is not particularly outstanding. At 8.42, a short theme programme entitled "Marching to Music" will be broadcast. The records include "Sons of the Sand," "A Medley of Marches" played, as a piano solo by llaie da Costa, "Musical Comedy Marches," and "Marching Song." Mr John Stanley's talk on "John Rutherford—White Maori Chief" commences at 9.5. Jack Hylton's versatile orchestra plays the amusing "Hyde Park Corner" at 9.20, and the regular Tuesday night "treat," the Japanese Houseboy, will be heard in "Battle Royal," a still further episode. At 9.38 commences "Music Round the Campfire," introducing "Utah Trail" and "I Love You, Nellie." This is followed by another ~ !l Voice of the People" recording, to-night's subject being "Princess Elizabeth." A programme of dance numbers ini strict tempo will be played from 10 to 11 o'clock. All good dance music is in "strict tempo," by the way. Another feature earlier in the evening will be Mr E. E. Wiltshire's talk on "Books of the Month." This is at 7.35. NEW ZEALAND MUSIC On Friday next at 8 o'clock listeners will hear forty minutes of New Zealand music. The 3YA Orchestra will play P. A. Home's "Bb March" and "Jours Passes"—an intermezzo. Mr Home was, of course, well known in Christchurch as manager of the Bristol Co. His song, "Haere Tonu," written in collaboration with Sydney Hoben (formerly of Christchurch), which follows theso items, will be sung by Ernest McKiiiley of Christchurch. The 3YA Orchestra continues at 8.12 with Rowe's "E Pari Ra," Alfred Hill's "Home Little Maori' Home," and Hikiroa's "Ka Mate." Fraser Gange's song, "Achal by the Sea," will follow. The composers are Laurence and McKellar. Of great interest to Christchurch listeners is Percy Nicholls's "Menin Gate Vision," which the 3YA Orchestra presents at 8.24. Mr Nicholls is a well-known Christchurch business man, and made some records in Australia s'ome years ago. He possesses a pleasing tenor voice. 1 look forward with interest to Mr Nicholls's Avork, which has been highly praised by Christchurch musicians, and hope later to hear it played by the Woolsfon Band, as I feel that it will be more impressive played by a brass band, especially one such as the WooTston Band. Ernest McKinlay will be heard again at 9.29, this time singing Hill's "Song of the Locust." "Hine E Hine," "Waiata Maori," and "Waiata Poi" will conclude the New Zealand music, and will he rendered by the 3YA Orchestra. MR "X" AGAIN Mr "X" was on the air a month or two ago, and although* I didn't hear his short radio story, a friend of mine Avas quite enthusiastic about it. His last story, listeners may remember, concerned a felloAv boarder Avho dealt ini tinned meat. T seem' to remember that poison Avas introduced into these tins, and that the death of a Prime Minister in some remote European state follOAved. AnyhoAv, listen to the record of Mr "X" next Thursday at 8.30 you'll probably find it interesting. COMING PROGRAMMES THTS EVENING.—See above. WEDNESDAY 3YL—B to 10: Variety programme.
