Nomads A Take Lead
KATIAIA. Mon., (Sp.)— Taking an outright decision from Mangataiore on Saturday. Nomads A forged to the head of the Mangonui Cricket Association’s competition. In the surprise result of the day, Nomads A won with 9 wickets in hand. Mangataiore, lacking the services of S. White and R- Harrison, batted first for 73, the Nomads skipper J. Hamilton dismissing N. Rogers for seven with a fine catch at mid-on and then also catching B. Switzer in the outfield
Nomads first innings realised 145 and Mangatoire replied with 121.
This left Nomads 49 runs to get in 30 minutes. They put up 52 for one wicket with five minutes to spare. Kaitaia, short of players for the first time this season, just scraped home against the weak Awanui side, winning on the first innings bv 102 runs to 99.
With Bradford caught on the boundary by R. Fitness for 13 and B. Thompson hitting his wicket to dislodge the bail at 16, Kaitaia was eight wickets down for only 84 but D. McKenzie (20), and G. Campbell (15) lifted the final tally to 102 for 9 by punishing everything loose in an exciting last-minute stand. Victoria Valley won on the first innings from Nomads B by 159 runs t 64.
Nomads followed on for 193 for G wickets, J. Beazley appearing all set for his century when dismissed lbw at 85 off D. White.
S. African Test Team CAPETOWN, Sun. (11.30 a.m.).— South Africa's team to meet Australia in the first cricket test at Johannesburg beginning on December 24 is: A. D. Nourse (captain), E. A. Rowan, O. Wynne, J. Nel. W. W. Wade, J. Cheetham, J. Watkins, H. Tayfield, V. I. Smith, N. B. Mann and C. McCarthy, with P. Winslow twelfth man.
