Ceylon's Smooth Govt Change-over

AUCKLAND, Mon. (P.A.) -• The change-over to self-government in Ceylon had been accomplished with surprising smoothness, said Mr L. Annesley, a tea planter, who arrived here by air today.

There had been no rioting such as that experienced in Malaya and other Eastern countries.

The natives’ attitude to the. British had not changed noticeably. They recognised that the British could still be helpful to the country, at least until the administration was more firmly established.

The standard of living generally was low, and workers found that strikes only deprived them of wages. The Government was planning to improve workers’ conditions.
