Smoothing Far North Roads For Tourists

KAITAIA, Sat. (Sp.) traffic, roads in the Furthest North are being given attention by the Mangonui County Council. The whole of the inland road from Waipapakauri to Cape Relnga is being graded, and the route is in good, order. Only a. few miles of this road are unmetalled.

m The unmetalled roads giving access to Te Hapua and Spirits Bay are also receiving attention, together with the metalled route to Paua on the western shore of the Parengarenga harbour. The six-mile route to Spirits Bay off the Te Hapua road was re-opened last summer for the first time in several years and numerous local and visiting motorists took advantage of this to reach the Furthest North coastlfhe. Among those to make the one-day journey from Kaitaia to Te Paki station, Cape Reinga, Spirits Bay and return were Their Exce I lencies the Governor-General and Lady Freyberg, in company with Mr R. H. Packwood. of the Ministry of Works. They travelled north to Te Paki via 90-Mile Beach and returned on the inland road. BEACH ACCESS For the past few weeks access to 90Mile Beach has been made difficult to motor vehicles at Waipapakauri by soft sand at the roadways end. This has received attention from the county council staff and some improvement has been made, but care is necessary. Access to 90-Mile beach at Ahipara is good at all points, as is that to Tokerau beach on the western shore of Doubtless Bay. which has increased greatly in popularity with

tourists ancl camping parties in recent years. Seaside cottages and cabins at Taipa are heavily booked for the holiday period. Popular Cooper's Beach motor camp, pending improvements to the water supply, has not yet been relicensed for public use.
