COLDER WINS MILE TITLE AT AUCKLAND
THE Dargaville runner, M. Colder, won the Auckland provincial mile championship at Carlaw Park on Saturday. He clocked 4.30 4-5 to beat Downey and Walker. Miss L. Orr (Whangarei) gained third place in the ladies discus.
A stirring finish and a dead-heat between N. T. O. Wilson and J. D. Sinclair highlighted' the meeting. Seven records were broken—t.he half-mile, three miles, discus, threemile walk, broad jump, ladies’ 75 yards and ladies’ high jump. Mss C. Malone, running for the first season in open company, beat the national title-holder, Miss L. Rowe, in the 220 yards. W L! Hough and D. Steward won two titles. Results were;-—• MEN. IOOYds.—W. British Team Leaves LONDON, Sun.—“l think this is the finest team we have ever sent to an Empire Games.” said the Secretary tor Commonwealth Relations (Mr Philip Noel-Baker), when he bade farewell at Waterloo station to over 70 athletes and officials of the British Empire Games team. He added; “ t will meet sterner opposition than ever before, but I feel it will give a good account of itself, and I know that New Zealanders will see that all enjoy themselves.” The team will sail in the Tamaroa. The remaining 40 members will leave by air in January. Among those who gave the team a send-off at Waterloo were Mr W. J. Jordan, Earl Beatty (commander-in-chief), Mr A. E. Porrit. and Lord Gowrie. Earl Betty, who will leave for New Zealand by air with Mr Porritt on January 23, said he was looking forward to his third visit to the Dominion.
There were no eve of departure hitches, according to Mr K. S. Duncan, secretary of the English Games Council. Ho was hopeful that the appeal fund's target of i'20,000 may yet be reached.
