AUCKLAND, Mon., (Sp.).— I The exOkaihau girl swimmer, Winifred Griffin, now Living in Auckland, scored a good win in the junior girls' 110 yaMs race at the Auckland Empire Games swimming trials on Saturday night. Her performance was noteworthy Decause it was the first time she had beaten Miss Z- von Zalinski. They swam together for 55 yards, but Miss Griffin then drew ahead and won hy four feet. Miss Griffin's time of 75 2-5 seconds was 3 2-5 seconds slower than her best last season. She appeared to be approaching her peak, whereas Miss Zalinski appeared to be affected by staleness. In the ladies’ 440 yards freestyle, Miss H. McKenzie beat the National champion, Miss B. Casey, by go yards. Miss McKenzie's time of 5.55 1-5 was 24-5 s better than recorded by Miss Griffin two clays previously. Miss Griffin had set a record for the pool. Misses Griffin and von Zalinski and a boy, P Heim, appeared to be the only juniors with claims for selection in the Empire Games team.
