Prohibition, State Control Recede In Marsden
TWO major factors emerge from the licensing poll in Marsden —greater belief in continuance of the liquor trade, with corresponding less support for its abolition and decreasing belief in state control. , ~ ... In a total vote of 13,244 formal votes on the preliminary count, continuance increased its support from 6228 in 1946 to 7462, while state control dropped from 3458 to 2297 and prohibition from 3672 to 3485.
Voting throughout the electorate followed closely the 1946 figures with the trend as revealed in the total figures being evident in booth returnsAll the Whangarei borough booths 6howed a swing away from Prohibition and State Control towards Continuance.
Other borough booths showed a similar trend.
Particularly interesting was the move away from State Control, possibly a reflection to Government control in other directions.
Voters at three booths entirely eschewed State Control but these were only in small country districts. Even in areas where there are no licensed hotels the voting followed the general line of the whole electorate.
At the principal booth of the electorate at the Town Hall Continuance gained nearly 500 while State Control drppped nearly 400 and Prohibition 100.
