Diamond Wedding Of Mr And Mrs Scrivener
ABOUT 50 guests were present at the diamond wedding of Mr and Mrs A. T. Scrivener, of George Street, Hikurangi, which was celebrated at the Anglican Hall there yesterday. Many tributes were paid to the sterling qualities of the old couple, the first to be married in the Midhirst Church, Taranaki, where the wedding was performed by the Rev. J. Pinfold in 1889. Telegrams of congratulations from all over the North Island, and one from the South, were read by a son, Mr A. N. Scrivener, of Opononi.
Speakers on behalf of the family were Messrs A. N. and S. H. Scrivener, of Ilokianga and Whangarei respectively. Mrs T. W. Fitness, of Frankton. a daughter, Mr H. W. Kenyon, a son-in-law of Pukehuia, and Mrs Elliot a friend.
Both were now worn out by continuous use. HOUSEKEEPING DIFFICULTIES After the wedding breakfast, he and his bride rode to their home on horseback. It was not until their third child was born, that Ihey owned a horse and trap. The family washing, said Mr Scrivener. was done outside in a galvanised tub. and cooking in a colonial oven.
Mr P. Irvine, a postmaster at Hikurangi. and Mr B. J. Hardie. spoke on behalf of Mr and Mrs Scrivener's friends. Duels were sung by Misses M. and 1,. Benton, of Hamilton, the couple's great-grandchildren, following which the cake was cut by Mrs Scrivener.

Replying to the toast "Mi- and Mr? Scrivener." Mr Scrivener made reference to the changes which time had brought. After tli-ir wedding they had received a Bible and a hymn book, as was the custom in those days, lie said.
The diamond wedding, a great and happy occasion, closed with the singing of the hymn. "Jesus Lover of My Soul." Toastmaster was Mr At. R. Edgar, of Hikuragni.
