Dictaphone Told Tales

BERLIN, Thu. (11 a.m.).—lt was a dictaphone that had been stolen, Johannes Hecker got two years’ gaol in Dusseldorf today for Laving stolen it and three "fences” were gaoled for periods ranging from four to six weeks.

What embarrassed the four defendants was hearing the dictaphone give evidence against them —because they had not turned it off.

The first ‘‘fence” had insisted on testing it before buying it. Then it passed through the hands of two more “fences,” dutifully absorbing details of each deal.

But the third “fence” picked an honest buyer who, having listened in, took the disc to the police.

The police finally got back to Hecker by arresting each purchaser in turn except the last honest citizen.
