Mr Churchill contended that the country would have to face a new depression as the result of devaluation. ‘‘lt is not only devaluation, but bankruptcy that confronts us now. “The Government has devalued the pound. “It has devalued the British nation, but most of all it has devalued itself.” The Prime Miniaer (Mr Attlee), replying to the debate, said ironically that Mr Churchill wanted to return to his ancient Liberal laissez faire creed (Mr Churchill was once a Liberal), During the war. Mr Attlee continued, Mr Churchill had, on every occasion, to resort to socialist measures to get production going. “Those were not the days when Mr Churchill was appealing to private profit all the time, but to public service,” he said. “We live in days of mixed economy, but mixed economy in a period of transition.”
