Missing Girls Found Working In Hamilton

Lucy Agnes Ryan, aged 15, and Margaret Rose Gordon, aged 13, who have been missing from their homes in Avondale since last Thursday, were found at a private hotel in Hamilton East by the police yesterday. They were taken back to Auckland. The girls were working at the hotel. While the police were waiting for them to dress, the girls got out of the room through a window in an attempt to escape. They were caught by one of the constables in Grey Street.
Advocating the growth in New Zealand of a number of species of Australian timbers, such as haap pine and crows ash, Mr E. R. Black, who has returned to Gisborne after a three months’ visit to the Commonwealth, said he believed it would be well worth the experiment. Australian haap pine and crows ash were milch more durable timbers than the New Zealand pines and softwoods, said Mr Black. Many Australian species resisted borer. Notice of his intention to ask for leave to introduce a Watchmakers Registration Bill was given by Mr M. Moohan (G —Petcvie) in the House of Representatives yesterday. The measure is sponsored by the Horological Institute, and is designed to ensure that repairs and other adjustments to timepieces are made only by competent craftsmen and that in this way the interests of the public are safeguarded. Judgment on a claim for damages arising from a fatal air crash at Paraparaumu on December 24, 1947, has been delivered by Mr Justice Smith. His Honor awarded £1843 damages to
the plaintiffs, Frank and Louisa Clewer, who claimed £2744 from Margaret Muriel Gould, widow of the pilot of the aircraft, Jack Mervyn Gould, and administratrix of his estate, and J. M. Gould, Ltd. The money was sought as compensation for the cost of replacing a portion of a house and contents damaged in the crash and subsequent fire and for shock and hardship, loss of rent and cost of accommodation.
The Hamilton City Council has appointed a committee to prepare evidence in support of the issue of further hotel licences for Hamilton. The evidence will be submitted to the Licensing Commission, which is to sit in Hamilton on August 23.
