19 Road Deaths During July
WELLINGTON. Fri. (P.A.)—With 19 people killed during July, road deaths now total 137 this year, said the Minister of Transport (Mr Hackett) today. He said the July figure was an improvement on last year, but the number killed this year was too high. Those killed last month included eight moforists. six pedestrians, three motor cyclists and two cyclists. An analysis of the accidents showed that while no one class of road user could be blamed, night driving under winter conditions was much more hazardous than normal driving. All must realise that a great deal of extra care was necessary at night, particularly in winter, when traffic peaks occurred during the hours of darkness.
