Chiefs Of Staff Reach Complete Understanding
LONDON, Thu. (10.30 a.m.). —American Chiefs of Staff and the British. Danes and Norwegians have “complete understanding,” said Admiral Louis Denfield today. “We had very fine meetings and we are going home with very much better understanding of the whole situation than we had when we came over,” he said.
Admiral Denfield was speaking on behalf of the three American Chiefs of Staff, who are visiting Europe for discussions on the defence of Western Europe and the establishment of the 12-nation defence organisation under the North Atlantic Pact. The Americans met the Danish and Norwegian representatives this morning. It is believed that they discussed plans to create a Scandinavian region within the North Atlantic Pact defence organisation. Admiral Denfield said the American chiefs were looking forward to meet-
ing the French, Dutch and Portuguese defence leaders, and the Western Union leaders in France tomorrow. There had been no discussions on American military aid for the North Atlantic Treaty signatories. Command functions had not been discussed. The talks had been confined to defence organisation. General Ole Berg. Chief of the Norwegian Joint Services, said: “We have discussed defence programmes and we arc finding a very good solution to our problem.” The three United States Chiefs of Staff ilew to Paris this afternoon.
