Africans Deny Ritual Murder
CAPETOWN, Thu. (10 a.m.).—Seven Africans, including a woman, pleaded not guilty in the court at Maseru (Basutoland) today to a charge of the ritual. murder of an African named Mohape in the Lerise district in October, 1947. The prosecution alleged that Mohape came to the village to look for his hat. He assaulted his sistr for some obscure reason and then left. He was called back by the female accused, and entered the hut in which accused and other women were present. Mohape was knocked unconscious. The prosecution said accused then mutilated the body and portions of flesh were excised from the eyelids, right arm, ears and the region of the kidneys. Blood was collected and' the body thrown over a high cliff, where it was was found the following day. Two leading Basutolan • chiefs, and five other Basutos, including a subchief and a headman, were executed at Maseru yesterday for their part in ritual murders last year.
