Maraetai In 1951
WELLINGTON, Fri. (Sp.). The first unit of the Maraetai hydro-electric power station is expected to be ready for operation oy the end of 1951, according to the Minister in charge of the State Hydro-Electric Department (Mr Semple) in his annual statement t-’hlorl in the House of Representatives yesterday. He emphasised that the power supply position in the North Island would depend upon the date of operation of Maraetai and that the return to satisfactory conditions hinged on its speedy completion. The Maraetai station will have five generating units each of 36,000 kilowatts, making a total capacity of 180,000 kilowatts. This is twice the power of the Karapiro hydro-electric station, the last development on the Waikato River. . All the Maraetai generating equipment is already stored in New Zealand.
