Humane Society Award To Dunedin Woman

NEWS IN BRIEF . .

The Royal Humane Society of New Zealand has awarded the bronze medallion to Miss Eleanor Gertrude Berridge, of Dunedin, for rescuing three girls and attempting to fescue two other girls at Allan’s Beach, Dunedin, on February 19.

The citation states' that while bathing at the beach, eight girls from Columba College got into difficulties when a sudden wave engulfed them. Miss Berridge, who was in charge of the party, went to their assistance and helped Edna Crawford, Valerie Mathewson and Winifred Scott to safety. She then returned and attempted to save Robin Ramsay, who, when carried ashore, was found to be dead. Through her instructions and partial help, several other girls whose lives were in danger were brought to safety. » # # +

Two of the veteran steamers of the Port Line, the 8515-ton Port Adelaide and the 8219-ton Port Danvin, have been ' sold for breaking up. The two ships, which have been engaged in the trade between the United Kingdom and Australia and New Zealand for 30 years, recently arrived in England from Australia with their last homeward cargoes. The line’s two oldest ships, the Port Sydney and Port Melbourne, were scrapped last year. The Port Adelaide was built in 1919 by Hawthorne Leslie and Company at New-castle-on-Tyne, and the Port Darwin was built at Belfast in 1918 by Workman, Clark and Company. * * * *

“I think it is time the country as a whole banded together to stop any further increases in building costs. Two years ago we thought the limit had been reached, but now there appears to be no peak,” said Mr A. Marr at a meeting of the Southland Building Industrial Council, at which the present high cost of building, and the resultant small number of people willing to build, was the subject of discussion. A motion asking various branches of the building trade to prepare statements on costs and relevant problems maintaining or likely to increase the cost of building, was passed. “We must sort out as much as we can the reasons for the high costs in the building industry today,” said the chairman (Mr E. H. Smith).
