Furds To Send UK Team To Gomes
LONDON, Wed—Lord -Gowrie and Mr Philip Noel-Baker, Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, are among the signatories of a letter to The Times from the Empire Games Appeals Committee calling for subscriptions toward the fund of £20,000 with which to send a strong British contingent to the Empire Games at Auckland next February. The letter says that the Empire Games had become a great Commonwealth institution.
“Anyone who has spoken with members of past teams or with athletes who hope to go will understand that such ja' visit to a distant Commonwealth country is not only a landmark in an athlete’s career but also an educational experience which the young men and women will never forget.” The Times, commenting editorially on the Appeals Committee’s letter, says that the Prime Minister (Mr; has sent a particularly pressing invitation to the United Kingdom, and after all the pleasure the New Zealand cricketers have given to English people this season it would be a debt of honour to send our very best to Auckland to play the return match with different weapons. “This is an occasion on which the game is worth very much more than the prize. Whether our teams win or lose, it is all in the family,” the paper adds.
