Australia Leads Mexico
Davis Cup . . ,
NEW YORK, Fri. (1 p.m.)—Australia leads Mexico by two matches to nil in the final of the American zone of the Davis Cup being played at Wilmington (Delaware). In the first singles today Sedgman defeated Armando Vega 12—10, 4—6, 6—4, I—6, 6—3, and Bromwich defeated Rolando Vega 6—o, G—2, 6—l. The matches were played in distressing heat.
Sedgman had a hard fight all through, and the result of the match was in doubt until the final game. Armando Vega would not concede defeat, and the Australian had to struggle for almost every point. Sedgman’s kicking service did not trouble the Mexican, who often drove it for winners.
Vega’s own service was very speedy, and he mixed his game well, employing fierce drives and angled dropshots. \
Sedgman won many points with lobs.
In the second singles Bromwich gave a classic display. He either dropped the ball just over the net, far beyond Rolando Vega’s reach, or drove or lobbed it to the baseline. Bromwich’s placing was excellent, and continually had his opponent on the run.
