Did Absence Imply Consent ?

WELLINGTON, Sat. (Sp.).—Failure of Dr A. M. Finlay (G—North Shore) to attend a Devonport meeting addressed by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holland) in favour of compulsory military training was criticised by Mr W. A. Sheat (O—Fatea) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Sheat said wherever he had gone, Mr Holland had invited the local member of Parliament to be present. All the members had responded or sent a message of apology, but Dr Finlay had not replied to his invitation. Mr Sheat said Dr Finlay had been continually interjecting during the debate in the house. He might have at least gone to Mr Holland’s meeting and interjected to show where he stood. "Was his absence due to lack of sympathy with the object of the meeting, or just a desire to keep himself unsullied by any association with the Leader of the Opposition?” asked Mr Sheat. . Dr Finlay, who was in the House at the time, smiled but did not answer.
