"It is no good making statements to Mr Lock—you have got to explain to me if you want to get off,” said Mr W. C. Harley, S.M.. in the Whangarei Court today, when listening to a charge brought by the Transport Department against John William Browne. Browne had failed to give way to a vehicle from his right, stated the charge. Inspector Lock said the charge arose from an accident at the Water StreetVine Street intersection. Browne had changed direction to the right in front of oncoming traffic.

“He did not fail to give way to any traffic from his right, but cut across oncoming traffic,” corrected Mr Harley. Browne said'he had not seen from which direction the other vehicle involved in the collision had come. When asked by Mr Harley ifi he had anything to say, he said he had made a . statement to Inspector .Lock. The magistrate then added his comment, and fined Browne 10/-, with 10/costs. LATE FOR CHURCH Joseph Isherwood was fined 30/-, with 12/- costs, for exceeding 30 m.p.h. in the borough. His excuse was that he was late for church. Inspector Lock said. For failing to give way to a vehicle approaching from his right, Murray Ford was fined 10/-, with 10/- costs and mileage 2/-. On a charge of exceeding 30 m.p.h. in the borough, he was ordered to pay costs. Desmond Waldron was fined 10/-, with 10/- costs and mileage 2/-. for failing to keep as far as practicable to the left. Inspector Gardener said the four wheels of Waldron’s ear were on the incorrect side of the white line. WANDERING STOCK "Wc have had a great deal of trouble with wandering stock at liikurangi,” said Inspector G. Hunter, when referring to a charge of permitting two cows to wander upon the road other than in the ordinary course of driving stock, brought against Wilfred Stevens. He was fined 10/-, with 10/- costs and 2/- mileage. Bernard Cuthbert Morgan was charged with using an unregistered tractor at Tauraroa.

Mr J. D. Gerard, for Morgan, said the tractor was being moved, and he could not avoid driving about half a chain along the road. Morgan was fined 10/-, with 12/- costs. A visiting. motorist, Brian James Eisdill Simpson, was lined £T. with 10/- costs, for driving in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. Inspector Hunter said Simpson had tried to overtake on a rise, turned to the right without a signal, and passed another car on an intersection.
