Debutantes Presented E . At Old Pupils’ Ball

Eight debutantes made their curtsies and were presented to the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs W. Jones) before a crowd of about 700 dancers at the Whangarei Town Hall last night on the occasion of the annual reunion ball of the Whangarei Old Boys’ and Old Girls’ Associations. The ball marked the successful culmination of the associations’ reunion activities and provided a most fitting climax to an annual event which brought together again old pupils from many distant places. When the last dance was over at 1.30 .this morning, there were many who were a little reluctant to leave the -floor, so successful had the evening been. And the success, as it undoubtedly was, must have compensated for the work and energy which the capable organising committee had put into the preparation of the function. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the debutantes, who had been carefully and painstakingly schooled for the ceremony, which proceeded smoothly to make the formal part of the evening a memorable spectacle.

No less enjoyable, however, was the remainder of the evening, with the large crowd in a festive and happy mood. BUFFET SUPPER To enable supper to be dispensed with the minimum of delay, a bullet where 125 people could enjoy savouries. poultry and sweets was arranged on the' stage. Even then, six different sessions were necessary to accommodate everyone. , Once again (he need for a more spacious dance floor in Whangarei’s Town Hall was very apparent, when, with several hundred people on the floor each time the band struck up, manoeuvring space was hard to find. Fancy steps were few and far between for this reason, but. in spite of the crush, all seemed to be enjoying themselves in no .uncertain manner. School House banners hung from the balcony lent assistance to the reunion feeling of the dancers. ' Once again the stage put on its party dress and trimmings, tinted arum lilies and greenery having been used to artistic effect. OFFICIAL PARTY. The official party comprised the Mayor and Mayoress, th ehcairman of the board of governors (Mr H. G. Carruth) and Mrs Carruth, the president of the Old Boys’ Association (Mr C. J. Dent) and Mrs Dent, the president of the Old Girls’ Association (Miss D. Lupton), the principal of the Boys’ High School (Mr H. A. Henderson) and Mrs Henderson and the principal of the Girls’. High School (Miss C. S. Bell). Misses P. Kemohan and J. Cook were responsible for training the debutantes for their important part in the function.
