Lovelock's Work Among Cripples
NEW YORK, Thu.—-Dr J. E. Lovelock, New Zealand’s former Olympic track champion, is featured today in the New York World Telegram’s personalities series, “Headliners of Yester Year.” Lovelock ,is the assistant-director of physical medicine and director of re* habilitation at the Hospital for Special Surgery', New York. He told the World Telegram that his interests in his present work—in the treatment of those crippled by infantile paralysis and other insidious diseases—goes back to his experiences with injuries to athletes. Lovelock said: “Everywhere athletes are often incredibly handled. , i. “Coaches do not know how to prevent injury, and treatment by the team, physician, with limited is Jh. many cases nadequate.” STAYING IN NEW YORK Lovelock is treating a youth who was crippled by the removal of a large tumour. The operation involved the cutting away of most of the calf muscles of the right leg, which became drawn back and left the kneecap rigid. Under Lovelock’s treatment the youth can now walk without crutches. Lovelock plans to remain permanently in New York. He said: “My wife is American, and besides you have . roofs over your heads. Also, you can fill your bellies here.”
