Reunion Sports Day At Whangarei High Schools

OLD pupils of both the Whangarei Boys’, and Girls’ High Schools who attended the annual reunion sports yesterday afternoon saw some excellent football, hockey and basketball gafnes. The past students came out top by winning all three hqckey matches and one of the two football games. Pupils were successful in the main .Rugby game and both basketball matches.

After the games at. both schools, visitors were entertained to afternoon tea.

Expressing his pleasure at the large attendance the principal of the Boys’ High School (Mr H. A. Henderson) said that each year more old pupils were taking an interest in their old school.

He hoped that next year a larger room would have to be found to accommodate guests at afternoon tea. Mr Henderson concluded a bright welcoming speech by saying that the school was determined to equal the achievements of old boys.

The president of the Old Boys’ Association (Mr C. J. Dent), in his reply, said that he considered something must have been wrong in the main Rugby game. / Old Boys had fielded a team consisting of two Northland representatives, several Whangarei representatives, and a smattering of senior players. BRILLIANT TRY A brilliant try capped off by Hughes in the last minute of the game gave High School Ist XV. an B—6 win over the formidable Old Boys combination. Boys in the lighter School 2nd XV. put up a plucky game against their more experienced opponents. For Old Boys J. Pierce was outstanding. He played a rousing forward game, scored two tries and was successful with a conversion. Old Boys teamed surprisingly well to register a 7—l victory in the hockey. The forward line was particularly impressive and M. Johnson, who scored four goals, was always in the picture. EVENTS AT GIRLS’ SCHOOL A view that, in spife of recent comments to the contrary, women were able to take part in sporting activities long after they left school, was expressed by the principal of the Girls’ High School (Miss C. S. Bell), in welcoming visitors at the afternoon tea. In reply, the president of the Old Girls’ Association (Miss D. Lupton) said that there had always been a happy relationship between old pupils and those of the present school and thanked Miss Bell, the staff and pupils for the warm welcome which they extended to them. i

Playing a team containing several Northland and Whangarei reps., the School’s Ist XI. put up a grand fight against the Old Girls A at the Girls’ High School grounds. Both sets of forwards showed ingenuity in their play. The Old Girls B team contained players of an earlier era, who indicated that the standard of hockey at the time they were at school must have been high. Basketball was played by ex-mem-bers of the school who were not so old, and resulted in the school putting up a sterling effort to cap both gardes. J. Dunbar and S. Davison were outstanding players in the School A side. Results were: RUGBY. School Ist XV 8 (Jones, Hughes tries, Maiht conversion), Old Boys 6 (Brockliss try, Dunn penalty). Old Boys 2nd XV 13 (Baker, Pierce 2 tries. Pierce and Taylor conversions). School 2nd XV 0. HOCKEY. Old Boys 7 (Johnson 4, Hnnnam, Reed, Fyfe), School 1 (Chainey). Old Girls A 2 (J. Allen, M. Frood), School A 1 (L. Hansen). Old Girls B 3 (Mrs M. Elliot 2, Mrs U. Johnson), School B 0. BASKETS ABE. School A 20, Old Girls A 18. School B 23, Old Girls B 13.
