Scripture Union Anniversary
Celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Scripture Union in England by Mr T. B. Bishop were held in the Baptist Church Hall, Whangarei, last night. The chairman of the New Zealand division of the union (the Rev. George Jackson. B.A:) and Dr Vine Martin, a North Island staff worker for the Crusader Movement, addressed the gathering of about 80 young people. The union -.was formed in 1879 to encourage the reading of the Scriptures and now has 1,000,000 members.. Its membership card is printed in 92 languages. In Whangarei the celebrations took the form of a rally for young people, a Bible quiz and competitions under the direction of the Rev. Foster Sherburd (Baptist, Whangarei). The Rev. S. Clark (Congregational, Whangarei), led a song service. Mr Jackson, who was formerly minister of the Green Lane Congregational Church, is on 12 months’ leave and is devoting his time to Scripture Union work.
He will hold services R Whangarei, Titoki and Kaikohe on Sunday and next week V'ill visit Eargaville and Paihia.
