NEWS OF THE DAY
BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP
R. 11. Conaghan, the holder, is leading H. E. Fenton by 500 points to 465 after the first session in the Northland billiards championship, which was played at Whangarei last night. Play was very even over the early stages, but Fenton passed the first 100 mark with consecutive runs of 30 and 35, to lead by 38. He was 50 in the lead at 300, but a lean period followed, and Conaghan, with several handy breaks, went to the front at 401 —380. Runs of 41 and 18 saw Fenton ahead at 443 to 420. Conaghan, however, finished well over the remainder of the session and ran to 500 with an unfinished break of 22. The final session will start at 7.30 tonight. HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL
Typifying the fond hopes of the employees of the Whangarei Harbour Board, a flag has been flying from the ridge of the new shed on the slipyard site for several weeks. As yet the emblem has not been removed by the traditional ceremony, and the flag is becoming weather-worn, as, too, are probably the hopes of the workers who built the shed. FIRST FINE DAY Yesterday was Whangarei's first fine day in July and also the first rainless day in Whangarei in 15. At 8 a.m. today the total rainfall for the first 13 days of the month was 2.41 in, compared with the month’s average of 7.7iin. This brought the fall for the year to 31.08 in, still less than half the annual average of 63.79 in. Only light rain occurred in the 15-dav period, the heaviest day’s fail for tire month being ,49in on July 2.
OKAIHAU WAR MEMORIAL After having heard a report, from the chairman (Cr H. T. Atkinson) on behalf of an inspection sub-committee, the Bay of Islands County Council yesterday decided to give its approval to the Okaihau war memorial scheme. Intimation of this approval will now go forward as a recommendation from the Bay County Council to the Department of Internal Affairs. Slight alterations were made to the plans, involving enlargement of the social room, on the suggestion of the council's sub-emnmittee.
NEW LETTER FORMS
Improved air-letter forms will be available from all post offices as soon as present stocks are exhausted. This will probably be in about four or five weeks. Paper in the new forms will be of a good quality. It will be reasonably opaque and the format will be identical with that of the British form. MEETING LAPSES With only five members present, the meeting of the Whangarei Trades Councill to have been held last night lapsed for want of a Quorum. The specially reduced lines of silk and cotton vests and pantees are quite a strong feature at Henry Wilson’s. This underwear is fine and soft and gives excellent service. Regular price 7/3 —special price 3/6 pair. r/wl
