Instructional Films

The first of the three films shown last night by the Whangarei Film Society was "We of the West Riding. Scenes in the smoky towns among the woollen mills and engineering works contrasted sharply with the picturesque countryside, on the moors, in the dales and the old world villages. The cultural life of the inhabitants of this part of Britain’s largest county was also depicted, showing their love of music an amateur acting. Their activities in sport from football to pigeon racing revealed that these people of the broad acres enjoy life to the full.

A former Huddersfield residedt. M M. Field, furnished an interesting com mentary.

‘‘Power From the River” is a film designed to show the people of New Zealand something of the problems of electric power supply. All phases of the work were illustrated, from the flow of the Waikato River into the Arapuni dam, through the turbines and generators, out to the main supply lines. Maintenance work, control and distribution, how peak periods were coped with, and reasons why winter cuts in supply were affected were well depicted. The third film,'while mainly produced for the benefit of prospective tourists from overseas, was nevertheless instructive and entertaining. Entitled ‘‘Meet New Zealand” it was divided into four parts. The Shape of the Land. Industry and Transport, Sport and The People, each chapter being easy to follow and well photographed.
